Christianity fair game on “Preachers’ Daughters”

Imagine a new reality TV show coming out of Hollywood entitled – “The Imans’ Daughters,” or “The Rabbis’ Daughters,” or Any-Religious-or-Ethnic-Groups’ Daughters.”   Of course such shows would never fly.  The outrage from the targeted group would be swift and loud.  And joining the chorus of protest would be every civil liberty, anti-defamation, and liberal organization who would pronounce condemnation on such denigration of a religion or ethnic group. 

That is, unless the target is Christianity – then it’s fair game.  Last year ABC gave us “Good Christians B—hes.”  Now, Lifetime TV is airing a new reality TV show, “Preachers’ Daughters,” which follows three real-life pastors and their families, showcasing the pastors’ rebellious, wayward teen daughters.  

“Preachers’ Daughters’ makes a point of portraying Christians as hypocrites whose faith makes no positive difference in the life and behavior of believers’ children.  In fact, it is made to appear that the “rules” of Christianity only cause the daughters to rebel all the more.

Lifetime TV points out “Christian” hypocrisy by displaying Bible verses throughout the show about how Christians are to live, followed by examples from the daughters’ lives which are completely contradictory to the scriptural teaching.   In essence, showing Christian girls thumbing their nose at the teaching of God’s Word on which they were raised.

In this episode, entitled “Lead Us Not Into Temptation,” one 17-year-old pastor’s daughter states:  “I feel caged when it comes to my parents.”  She lies to her parents so she can go to a party in a hotel room with two other girls and three guys.  She tells the camera:  “None (of them) are the types of guys I would bring home to meet my dad.  They’re all bad.  Bad boys hang with bad boys.”  She is shown “dancing” with a guy as she grinds against his groin while he’s simulating sexual moves.  Then, this pastor’s daughter who last week said she wanted to be a porn star, tells the guy:  “We’re gonna make our own porn.”

Another preacher’s family, in which all four daughters have been raised with a strong commitment to save sex until marriage, is shocked when the oldest daughter, now married, tells her family she wasn’t a virgin when she got married.  She tells the camera:  “Growing up, the biggest ‘no-no’ as a Christian, if you will, is pre-marital sex.  I mean, it’s the biggest sin you could possibly commit because ‘Christian’ girls don’t do those things.  This is how your mind is warped so much when you grow up in a box – this Christian box.”

This is the message Lifetime TV is sending – that Christian kids grow up “caged” and in a “box.”  That Christianity “warps” them.

However, as this poster on Lifetime’s website wrote:

“I'm a preacher's daughter and I act nothing like those girls.  Preacher's kids are already stereotyped as rebellious, unruly children this show isn't helping at all.”

Another wondered why Christian families would trust Hollywood to give a fair representation of Christianity and agree to be featured on “Preachers’ Daughters.”  She stated:

“Come Christians! I understand we have problems as well, but we should not be parading foolishness around on TV for a few bucks. The PASTORS on this show should consider how many people will be turned away from the GOSPEL because of this. This is coming from a Preacher's Daughter.”

Displaying authentic, life-changing faith is certainly not the goal of “Preachers’ Daughters.”   Instead, it stereotypes all Christians – sinners saved by grace – as hypocrites and frauds.
